Sadly, No One Wants To Adopt This Adorable Pup Because of The Color of His Coat

When you think black animals, what is the first things that come to your mind? For most Americans like myself, the answer might be, “7 years bad luck if they cross you” or “bad omen,” two things that couldn’t be further from the truth. In shelters across the United States, the only other animals that have a euthanasia rate on par with Pit bulls, are animals with a darker coat.

In certain cultures, the color black is looked at so ominously, that shelter patrons usually pass up darker coat animals, in favor of their brown and blonde counterparts. Sad indeed.

For one adorable pup named Willy Wonka, the pain of rejection is all too real. Willy has been at the Carson shelter in Gardena, California, waiting for someone to take a chance on him after his owner mercilessly surrendered him for no reason. In the midst of the chaos, and noise that comes along with a residency at Carson, the terrified pup, who is described as sweet, loving, and gentle, can often be seen cowering in the corner.

In fact, as a way to alleviate his fears, the 2-year-old chihuahua hugs his toys as the only solace from the jungle that is Carson. A shelter volunteer who wished to remain anonymous told me that Willy is the sweetest dog she has met. The only logical conclusion she could draw from why the interest level is so low has to do with one thing: the color of his coat.

A Petharbor listing for Willy reads,

“My name is Willy and I am described as a neutered male, black Terrier mix. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old. Please help me.”

SpeakUp, if you or someone you know is interested in giving this precious pup the home he deserves, please contact the Los Angeles County Animal Control – Carson at (310) 523-9566 and reference the shelter ID #A5032282.
