Sad Pup Living in Kill Shelter Can Only Cry As He’s Placed on Death Row
When I think of all time places that evoke a profound sadness in my heart, nothing quite topples the Carson Animal Shelter in Gardena, California. Carson is not a place you would pin your hopes and dreams on to say and write the least because it is quite literally a prison for dogs. Dogs are given just weeks, and sometimes even just days to find homes before they are “humanely euthanized.” The cash-strapped, city-funded shelter struggles to find free kennel space for the hundreds of dogs who are surrendered on a monthly basis, and so sometimes, “hard decisions” need to be made according to Carson.
One dog who can tell you all about the politics of the Carson shelter is a pup by the name of Oliver. Oliver is a staff favorite, who, unfortunately, has been overlooked by shelter patrons for reasons unknown. He is said to be sweet, friendly, kind, and just a joy to be around. Oliver is one sweet affectionate pup who can charm the socks of you, evidenced by the fact that he has been at the Carson shelter for an incredible 81 days. Carson staff love him that much.
Sadly, Oliver was recently placed on death row and has been scheduled to be put down in a matter of days, if he doesn’t find a home. At Carson, it doesn’t matter who much a dog is beloved. At the end of the day, protocol rules the day.
As he was walked out of his kennel, and brought to the back where shelter volunteers at Carson dub “death row,” Oliver could be heard letting out a subtle cry as if he knew his day of reckoning had finally come.
