Sadly, No One Wants to Adopt This Pup In Kill Shelter Because of The Color of Her Coat
In certain cultures, the color black is a bad enough omen, that people do everything they can to avoid the color altogether. In America in particular, folklore says that if a black cat crosses in front of you, 7 years of bad luck ensues.
This foolish buffoonery couldn’t be further from the truth, however, some people still believe this. For black dogs and cats living in kill shelters across this great nation of ours, the struggle is all too real. Statistics show that black dogs and cats of color, are more that 50% more likely to be put down, then their light brown and blond counterparts. Sad indeed.

For one dog living at the high kill, Miami-Dade Animal Services(MDAS), her new reality is a matter of life or death. Blackie, a three-year-old labrador retriever who volunteers at MDAS affectionately call “sweetie pie,” has faced a level of discrimination one wouldn’t want to wish on their own enemies. Blackie has to sit and watch other dogs get adopted right before her eyes, as she is routinely passed up time after time.
An anonymous shelter staff member who didn’t want to go on the record for this story, said the only thing she could think of as to why this was happening, was because of the “stigma” associated with black dogs. Unfortunately, folks, Blackie is facing discrimination.
SpeakUP! we can change this. Blackie deserves a life apart from a place where most dogs who enter, don’t come out. Instead of playing out in a field, enjoying her doggie toys and treats, she makes a cold concrete slab her only solace from the pain of rejection and fear.
If you or someone you know is interested in giving this precious pup the forever home she rightfully deserves, please contact the Miami-Dade Animal Services at (305) 884-1101 and reference the shelter ID #A1844832.
Additionally, please share this story on Facebook or Twitter so we are closer to finding Blackie the forever family she rightfully deserves. We have done it before and can certainly do it again.
